These are scammers pretending you owe tax and if you do not pay in a certain time you will be arrested. I rang the official ATO number and they said they are scammers and are being investigated. If they call you just hang up and get your service provider to block the number. Or if you are like me just keep calling them and see how they like it. They are the lowest scum on the earth.
Very convincing man with an Indian ancient was trying to force an IMMEDIATE payment of unpaid taxes based on an "irregularity".
Just not how the ATO operates. DON'T give any information without ringing back the official published telephone number of the Australian Taxation Office.
Do not believe that, if ATO called you that they will tell you which department or name. The guy called me just before, when I said I will go to ATO to check then the sound is big difference and so angry will put my case on court and line disconnect ...

Caller: ATO federal tax office.
Pretended to be from ATO and threatened that I had 1 1/2 hours to pay up.
SCAM!!
I just received a call from this number. The guy said he was from the ATO. I told him that I would call him back using the ATO switchboard. When I could the ATO they said that they did not try to call me.
The good news is that ATO will only approach you with a written documents on their letterhead.
They will never ring you about anything except that you have requested a call from them.
I cannot imagine these scammers get anything, they are the worst I have come across.
Hi all.
Just got a similar call from the same guy from this number telling me that the police were going to be on their way due to issues with my tax.
The guy had an Indian accent and wanted money within the hour.
Definitely a scam.
I got call from this number today. The guy with asian assent telling me I have something wrong with ATO. I was not in a situation to talk I told him can we talk latter, then he said police will come and arrest you. I was surprised. I said I am paying tax regularly through my accountant. And I just hang up. He called me several times but I didn't answer.
I think just fraud call. Don't give any personal details. Contact to ATO directly .
I had the same call this morning, I didn't take the call so he left a message. He identified himself as Jack Smith from the ATO - said a warrant had been issued for my arrest.
I am going to call the police and report it - not sure if it will do any good.
I received a call from this number and a person with an Asian accent that was barely understandable and from what I could understand he stated that he was calling from the Australian Tax Office and that an audit of my tax returns over the past couple of years had shown some irregularities and that this matter was currently going through the the courts and did I have a "criminal lawyer" engaged. At this stage I told him that I had not received anything in writing from the ATO and he should just go away, all the while whilst he was continuing to talk over the top of me. I hung up.
Minute or so later he calls again with same story and mentioning things like this is in the "courthouse now", words that normal Australians just don't use and continuing to talk over me. I told him to go away and hung up.
I only answered the call initially because it appeared to be a local number (I have visual caller id activated on my phone), so the scammers are getting smarter and are using local numbers.
