    Just had a nuisance call from a computer-generated male voice caller talking about how I was going to be arrested if I didn't take action on their instructions. It was just a replay of a message and at no point was there any opportunity for me to engage or interact with the caller. My mobile listed the calling number as 02-61721107 (which would indicate New South Wales [Australia]). The call lasted about 45 seconds.

    I didn't answer this call and let it go to voicemail.

    When I listened to the message, it was an american computerised voice saying:

    'Now if we don't hear from you, we will have to issue an arrest warrant and get you arrested. Please call me back on this number ASAP. Thank you'.

    Massive scam.

    This is a scam. You are being told that you owe money to the tax department and unless you follow their directions an arrest warrant will be issued. Hang up on it.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
