If you've received a call from 02 6172 1107 / 0261721107, brace yourself. This number has gotten a reputation for perpetrating one of the more insidious tax-related scams in Australia. According to numerous user reports, victims are being targeted with automated messages threatening arrest for supposed tax violations.

The Nature of the Scam

Reviewers have widely declared this phone number to be a scam. Commonly, the scammer will initiate a call or leave a voicemail claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). They often employ an automated, robotic voice, sometimes with an American accent, to relay alarming messages that create a false sense of urgency. Customers report being told they will face serious legal actions, including arrest, if they don’t return their call immediately. Clearly, this is a high-pressure tactic designed to manipulate individuals into sharing personal information or payment details.

Recognising the Warning Signs

  • Automated Messages: Many users mentioned that the calls are automated and lack any genuine human interaction.
  • Threatening Language: Tactics involving threats of arrest create fear and cause victims to panic.
  • Impersonation of Official Entities: Claims to be from the ATO, leveraging authority to instil pressure.
  • False Heroes: Sometimes these calls might suggest they can solve your issues if you call back.

What You Should Do

It’s crucial not to engage with the caller or return the call. Simply hanging up is the best option if you receive such a call. If you're ever in doubt regarding your tax situation, or if you receive a call you suspect to be a scam, it’s wise to contact the ATO directly using verified contact numbers through their official communication channels.

Just had a nuisance call from a computer-generated male voice caller talking about how I was going to be arrested if I didn't take action on their instructions. It was just a replay of a message and at no point was there any opportunity for me to engage or interact with the caller. My mobile listed the calling number as 02-61721107 (which would indicate New South Wales [Australia]). The call lasted about 45 seconds.

I didn't answer this call and let it go to voicemail.

When I listened to the message, it was an american computerised voice saying:

'Now if we don't hear from you, we will have to issue an arrest warrant and get you arrested. Please call me back on this number ASAP. Thank you'.

Massive scam.
