Understanding the Threat of 02 6152 8673: A Scam Exposed

The phone number 02 6152 8673 / 0261528673 has gained notoriety among Australian users as a scam number linked to fraudulent claims of tax evasion and criminal charges. This alarming trend has been confirmed by various reports from individuals who have received intimidating calls and messages purporting to be from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and the Office of Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

Users have consistently reported similar themes in these calls, with the scammers claiming that there are criminal allegations related to tax evasion or fraud made against the recipient. They adopt various identities—sometimes claiming to be "Officer Tom Johnson" or "Sean Williams"—and often using accents that add a layer of confusion. Most notably, they fail to provide any personal identification information, which should raise immediate red flags regarding their legitimacy.

Types of Scams Associated with This Number

  • Impersonation Scams: Scammers pose as ATO officials and threaten recipients with urgent legal action.
  • Phishing Attempts: These calls aim to extract personal or banking information under the pretense of resolving supposed tax issues.
  • Recorded Messages: Many reports indicate that recipients receive automated messages that sound official but contain vague details, increasing the apparent urgency.

Common Characteristics of These Scams

  • No specific personal details are mentioned, making it clear the caller does not have legitimate information about you.
  • Urgent calls demanding immediate callback could suggest a mechanism to pressure individuals into acting without thinking.
  • Attempts to ask for personal or banking details should always be regarded with skepticism, especially when unsolicited.

It is important to note that the ATO does not engage in such practices; they do not make unsolicited calls for tax collection and would never request sensitive information over the phone. If you receive a call from this number, it is advisable to hang up immediately and report it to the relevant authorities.

How to Handle Calls from 02 6152 8673

Sydney NSW - Call received today (calling number ID not captured) in the same format as that reported by "Kayleen Queensland" from a Female, est 20-25 y. O, with a subdued but recognisable Kiwi accent, also claiming to be from the "Australian Assistance Project" - claiming to be a public information service for an under-utilised ATO initiative dating back to the 1980's (specifically mentioned the 'Keating era'), offering Tax Benefit/Incentives/Reductions for "higher income earning home owners, aged 59 years or under". I told her that, as a disability pensioner, I did not meet those criteria, but I had several friends within those parameters who would be interested. She asked for their phone numbers (despite also claiming they were contacting ALL mobile and landline phones in Australia), but I refused to provide details, telling her I could much more quickly give my friends with a direct link to the online form she claimed had to be completed on on the ATO website.

She then claimed there were many variations of the form applicable to different and highly specific circumstances (mentioning various numbered sub-sections of s.12 and s.15 of the Tax Act, without naming any).

When I provided specific age, income and home owner status details for a hypothetical "friend", she still refused to provide a URL to the "online form" based on the criteria she had originally requested to determine eligibility, and then attempted to terminate the call, claiming I was clearly not interested. I kept her on the line a little longer, insisting that I was interested, and wanted to pass on the "information" she claimed she was employed to disseminate, but she refused.

Damned strange behaviour for an "information service", don't you think?

THIS IS A SCAM, PHISHING FOR PERSONAL DETAILS. DON'T BE FOOLED!!

I received a call today from overseas, so I let it ring through to message bank. The guy told me I should run thei number due to tax fraud and should contact the ato in Canberra immediately. I figured it would be a scam so I googled the number and ended up here. Pretty much guessed it was a scam when it was overseas calling to claim they were Ato but not once mentioned my name through the whole message. The number they asked me to call back on was 02 61528673.
