What Users Are Reporting
Victims of this scam have described receiving messages that claim they are implicated in serious legal troubles, including tax evasion and fraud charges. The messages typically do not provide any concrete information, such as a legitimate company name or specific details, but instead create a sense of urgency. The callers often speak with an American accent, raising additional suspicions about their legitimacy.
The Tax Evasion Scam
- Initial contact via voicemail warns the recipient about urgent legal action against them.
- Messages often mention the Australian Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP), yet fail to provide any verifiable details.
- Victims are urged to return calls immediately, perpetuating a fear of dire consequences.
Why It's Considered a Scam
Legitimate authorities, such as the CDPP or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), would not initiate such threatening communications through vague voicemails with no formal introductions. Instead, official correspondence is always conducted through legitimate letters or secure portals, substantiating the argument that calls from this number are fraud-laden.
