    Scam: aggressive message about tax evasion and fraud with threats of legal action left on home phone. Indian accent. Why - what a dickhead. Just hope he doesn't frighten some elderly person into thinking they've done something wrong. Am going to report to telstra.

    A jerk with a thick accent. Aggressive, fast talking and threatening. Take a leaf from the Tax Office - they are courteous and a pleasure to talk to.

    Wake up bucko... You are a jerk.

    Received a message of answerphone today from a Michael Bevan, american accent, claiming to be from the ATO regarding a serious case of tax fraud that had been lodged against me. He never used my name in the message and he requested that I call this number. Obvious scam.

    Left a message on my landline. Claims to be from ATO Headquarters and threatened legal action about some tax case, said commonwealth department will be in touch and a local police officer has the warrant. Foreign accent and poor grammar used. Total scam!

    The accent was an Australian one and therefore sounded more genuine than the usual "scam" type calls of this nature. They stated tax was owing and the client needed to call this number asap. After she put the phone down, it rang again and when she picked it up there was a voice still speaking.

    A total scam it would seem.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
