If you did not proceed to the 3rd and final step which is the payment to them for the $250 minimum cost..
I suggest its them following up the $$$$$$$.

Very persistent........ Called Friday and again today Monday. Same message, tone hadn't changed so obviously recorded. Shows as "private" on CID. If they want to be more convincing they need to change their recorded voice message.
Received automated voice text message twice on 24/08/2015 claiming to be ATO saying to avoid further action being taken call Nicki Johnson on 02 61528656. Assumed it was a scam, so did not ring back.
Received scam call on voice mail (101) on fri 22 aug from alleged ATO saying ATO is investigating and don't ignore call and ring 0261528656.
Received a call from this number claiming the same as others to be a niki Johnson from the ato. Voice sounded automated suspected it to be a scam immediately. Was actually a little difficult to understand the call back number, it sounded different upon the number being repeated .

Found scary message on answering machine (Tues 02 June, late afternoon), threatening criminal action and asking me to ring back because it was "time sensitive". Did not address me by name, did not give reference number. Transparently a scam. Am reporting to police. (from Sydney).
Definitely a scam - I presume this is just connected to a voip back to India. What do they actually want? A fee to lodge papers?
Received a message on my voicemail with threats of legal actions as per other conplaints for this number. I called the number back and was answered by "the legal department of the ATO" who asked for my phone number to identify myself. I told them the number and they looked up their database and asked me if I was P. James (I am not, but I receive a lot of spam calls for a 'Mr or Mrs James' on my phone number). The man asked me for my name (which I refused to give him) and he said that he would remove P. James from the database.
The original message was very threatening telling me that if I did not respond I would 'face the consequences of the criminal charges' or something like that. And wished me a "blessed day" :-).
1 June 2015 - 11.34am - phone message: purportedly the Australian Taxation Office - threatening legal proceedings; demanding 'Attorney's name'; criminal court listings; very serious and time-sensitive; 'have a blessed day'. I reported it to the ATO who replied that there had been numerous fraudulent calls. All phone companies and Police should be able to investigate and STOP.
I received this call today immediately suspected it was a scam by the threatening tone (not very professional) the fact that it was not addressed to me personally and if it was a genuine call I would have expected to be given a reference number to quote. I shall report it to the police.
I received this same call on my answering machine. I agree the accent was strong, but knew that the call was a hoax.

Alternately, you can check the ATO website for current scams. I agree, it can be scary to the older generation who has to hear this message.

I couldn't understand a lot of it 'cos the accent was so strong, but something about an attorney and it was time sensitive and I should get in touch asap. Scam message left on answering machine claiming to be ATO - South African accent. Stating the receiver was implicated in a serious criminal matter currently before the courts. Very unsettling for the aged recipient.

Came home to find the same message on my answer machine - calling from the ATO regarding a serious matter that would be dealt with in the Commonwealth Courthouse in my region. I knew this would be a scam but tried calling the number anyway and was an overseas ring tone and rang a few times then went to engaged signal. Definitely not ATO they would not operate this way. I am going to take this further with the authorities tomorrow as this MUST be stopped now!

I came home today to a message on my answering machine from 'ATO Headquarters' the Australian Taxation Office Headquarters. The guy said his name was Jeffery Morgan and he needed my 'attorney' information as there was criminal proceedings commencing against me in the 'Federal Court House' within my local area. If I didn't call back to advise my information the matter would be very serious. Seriously, could it be any more obviously a scam? I hope these criminals get caught and fast.
The caller using this number claims to be the Australian Taxation Office advising that a court action has been lodged in the Federal Court/High Court/Commonwealth Court (they appear to be confused) against the person being called. Its a scam.
ATO Scam! - Our Answering Machine took a call from a scam sounding scumbag saying I am under investigation for fraud and I needed to call him back as the situation was "time sensitive". If I diddnt call back I would expect severe legal action!
