Received a call on this number from a man with a heavy Asian accent and claimed he was from the Australian Federal Govt. I just slammed down the phone.
Scam still active, this time they are asserting they are from the Finance Dept for Australian Govt and wanting to refund fees wrongfully charged by australian banks.

Had the same message. Any genuine legal action starts with a service of claim which is filed with the Court. In the case of tax evasion this would be with the Federal Court. I am a lawyer and my wife also works with the ATO. I am tempted to call the number back just to have some fun, but I will also be following it up with the ATO to see what action they are going to take to track down this maggot.
I have just received a call from a Jacob Stafford from this number who said he was from the legal dept of the ATO and I had been underpaying my tax for six years. He had a very broken accent and threatened me with jail. It was clearly a scam from the outset. He did give me this number for me to check and his ID number of 95860202 but refused to tell me my own tax file number. When it all started to unravel he became very excitable and threatened me again: "They will come to your house and take you away in handcuffs". GIVE ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER ABOUT YOURSELF TO THESE PEOPLE.

I didn't bother wasting my time in ringing them back. The lowest of low life. Just worry that if someone elderly received a call like this they might believe it and part with their hard earned money. Message left on my phone similar to other entries " Geoffery Morgan calling ATO about tax evasion urgent to phone back, time sensitive matter. Americanish accent. I phoned the number, answered by Indian sounding male voice, saying it was the legal department of the ATO. I asked to speak to Geoffery Morgan, put on hold & supposedly G. M answered me now with a distinct Indian accent. I asked for G. M again he said he was G. M I said you sound very different from your phone message. He now said my name & address, pronouncing it very awkwardly, he went on with, there is a legal case against me, had been a random tax audit for 2009 to 2015, I was being charged for tax evasion & sued. Told me I had to Criminal legal representation. Said I didn't have any as I have never needed any. Tried to authenticate this scam by giving me ID number & case file number, that this call was being monitored & an arrest warrant is being issued, I asked several times how much I owed, finally told $8.215.33. He then wanted to give me the full spiel & told me I was not to interrupt him. He quoted 4 charges with code numbers. Told this amount would be collected, personal assets including my house would be seized & my passport. I would also be written in newspaper that I was being charged with tax fraud & tax evasion. When I asked how do I pay this money he said he was only the legal department not the bill collector, he would put me onto his supervisor. Another male answered "Kevin Shaw" with a made up accent. He was very officious I was a tax evader & the reason why the country was not doing well because of deliberately evading taxes. His tone became more assertive to aggressive about the warrant for my arrest & that he didn't think I deserved to have this resolved by paying the money back as I willfully evaded taxes. He would have the local authorities come to my house & have me handcuffed & dragged off to jail. When I told him he was being threatening & unprofessional, he became more aggressive & said you just see, someone would be there in 45min with papers, charges & arrest warrant, handcuff me & drag me off to jail. There was a bit more but in the end I told him he was scum. I believe they threaten & say it was deliberate tax evasion & you don't deserve a chance to pay money back, so that you will be eager to be given the chance & not be arrested & have it written up in the local papers. It is an elaborate scam, with a number of scum pretending to be ATO personnel & smallish amounts of money quoted as being owed that could be accessed by the receiver of the calls quickly enough before they re thought what was actually going on. Or maybe giving their bank details to the scum to pay back money before the arrest warrant was actioned. I am not sure how they were eventually going to "allow" me to pay "back" the money. Hopefully these scum will be caught & a real arrest warrant will be issued & they will end up in jail. Hopefully the ATO is investigating this scam where these scum are impersonating ATO personnel. BEWARE SCUM SCAM ALERT.
Got a message on my answering machine today from 0261528644 saying - " This is Jeffrey Morgan from Australian Taxation Office and tax evasion and they had launched legal action against me for tax evasion. I had to call back immediately, as this was a time sensitive matter and needs your utmost attention, you or your attorney need to call us back. Do not disreguard this message and call us back immediately." It was an American sounding voice. They did not stipulate a name as to who in the household this was in reguard too' - right there I thought this message was odd. Anyway I rang back just to see what they were after and an Asian sounding person answered the call but they just said "hello" like a home phone answer not a business (but then sounded very dodgy as they kept mumbling and pausing) then vaguely suggested that the person I was calling for had stepped out and to call back in 10 minutes. BEWARE SCAM SCAM SCAM people like this sicken me to my stomach. As individuals do fall for this sort of thing. I'm going to ring back to get what ever payment options they offer and report it to -[link] directly. Anyone contacted via these scum find out the same information and report it maybe they might be able to track these 'insults to the human race' and catch them!!!!! I called back this number 02 6152 8644 at 7pm in ACT! And was connected to a senior officer, because Jeffrey Morgan who called and left the message is not available. I wanted to know what it is all about. He told me that ATO made a claim because of tax evasion and they had been several time at my place and that they think I try to avoid them. And now they will call the local police and they will come to my place within two hours and handcuff me and bring me to jail. And I will be fined 100'000 and they confiscating my house and all my assets. I am still waiting . . . I know I did all the wright thing. SCAM SCAM! !

I had a Kenneth Short / Shaw call me saying same as below comments being from the ATO and that I am being investigated for tax evasion and will have legal papers put on me in 3 weeks if I do not return the call. Definate scam.

He simply left a message stating he was Kenneth Mathews from the ATO and we were in error with our tax obligation and filing a petition against my name. He further stated it was about to go to court soon if we didn't call back and sort it out and that our house address is now under surveillance.
The thick accent caught my attention and the strange number being 02 61403464 he gave to call back also gave me a strong clue it was a hoax. Knowing I had done nothing wrong I wasn't too worried especially now seeing the same issues from the same guy above.
Someone needs to do something about this for its a very direct attempt guessing he would have asked for money etc if I had gone to the trouble to call him back and not found all this evidence on line.
