My husband has received 3 of these calls on our landline today (May 18), with increasingly good English. He keeps telling them to phone me (on my mobile). Thanks to the info above I have been able to tell him it's definitely a scam. Cheers.

I just received a call from this number. The Indian sounding gentleman - who goes by the name Steve Williams told me he was from the Reclaim Finance Dept of the Federal Govt. And said the same speel as previous comments, including the amount. Was given the instruction to ring straight away Rose Brown or Steven Coleman.

I live in Carramar WA, so not sure where other people are from, so hard to say if they are targeting a particular area ?

A male caller (strong Indian accent) advised that he was from the Australian Government Department of Finance, “based in Sydney”. He implied that I was to be reimbursed the sum of $7500 as a consequence of my being overcharged for numerous banking services over recent years. He asked how I would like the money paid to me: by cheque to my home address or into my bank account. I indicated that I did not have certain information at hand and asked for a number to call him back on. He then stated that he needed some information from me first. He asked for my DOB "for security purposes". I gave a false DOB, which he readily accepted. He already had my name and address, and asked me to spell my first name, which I did. He then asked for my second name. I gave a false name with he accepted. I again asked for a contact number to call back on. The number given was 02 61528642 (?): I would be speaking to either Mrs. Rose Brown or Mr. Stephen Coleman. He said that I should state application number SM1097. Several flags were raised to point to this being a scam: silence and hesitation at the start of the call, the accent, difficulty in explaining why the Government would refunding monies “illegally” taken from me by my bank (I was one of 1700 individuals) and the Federal Dept. Of Finance doesn’t phone us with such trivialities (surely they would write if they were serious). Also, it’s not normal in Australia to use honorifics when giving contact names (in my experience, at least).

Yeah they just rang me sounded so suspicious said I had a $7500 refund coming my way from the ATO regarding overcharging from the bank. He wanted too much information from me which he didn't get. It's definitely a scam.

It looks like they are at it again! Today 29/4/16 I received the call from a woman with an accent, offering to send me a cheque for $7.500. Now isn't that a coincidence - exactly the same amount of overcharged bank fees as other people! I feel sorry for the people making the calls, that they are so desperate for work that they would spend their day trying to hoodwink others. One would think - based on the accent of the callers that they would have a very good idea of the principle of Karma.

Recieved a call (foreign Accent - as usual) stating that after federal govt. Investigations on banks overcharging of fees on transactions I was owed $7500. Needed to elect direct debit or cheque(nominated cheque) and was then advised to contact his supervisor for authorisation to release the funds. Was provided a name and the phone number, but didn't call back.

Received a call today saying I was owed money by the federal government. When given the option of a cheque or direct debit, I chose cheque. You have to ring the above number to confirm your details, no answer when you ring.

Had a few calls saying I was being sued for tax evasion, very amusing. They said I was mailed some form of documentation so I asked them to tell me the address and it was indeed my address. I then went on to ask them to tell me my full name in which they replied with my initials and surname but could not give me my first name. What I believe they are doing is looking in the white pages or something similar and getting an address and surname and then trying to find someone who is an easy target.

Had about 6 phone calls today, I answer then they hang up.

I also got the same message regarding ATO and CDPP. I have forwarded my concerns about this being a scam to the CDPP. The accent of the 'automated message' is odd and sounds very unprofessional. I am tempted to call the number and find out how much money they expect for this issue to disappear. Hilarious!

I received a phone call and a message was left on my answer machine.

Received a call today about CDPP and ATO saying they have an arrest warrant out against my name and there are legal actions to be taken against me on account of tax fraud and no tax filing. He went on to say they had tried to notify me via registered mail which were returned undelivered leading to a legal lawsuit against my name. The number left on my messagebank to phone is 02 6152 8642 that he said was a hotline number. This is a scam so please be aware of these fraudsters as they play on the elderly and would make a vulnerable person feel scared and they would be able to manipulate the person.
