The Nature of the Scam

Participants in this troubling scam typically introduce themselves as officers from the ATO, further claiming that individuals have committed tax fraud. They create a phony sense of urgency by stating that legal actions will follow if the call is not returned promptly. The fraudulent tactics aim to dupe people, particularly the vulnerable and elderly, which is especially concerning. Callers have referenced jail time, court cases, and surveillance of homes, exploiting fear as their primary weapon.

Common Themes in User Reports

  • Threatening Messages: Many reports describe aggressive voicemails that create an atmosphere of impending legal troubles.
  • Impersonation of ATO Officials: The fraudsters often claim to be ATO representatives and provide fictitious names, such as "Jason O'Connor."

Just got home to Perth from interstate after losing my mum to cancer to find numerous messages from these idiots threatening someone with fraud and tax evasion. Why isn't anything being done about these people?

I just received an aggressive message on my answering machine from a man claiming to be officer Jason O Connor from the ATO. He threatened jail time if I didn't call the number provided and said my house was possibly under surveillance. He sounded South African to me. I will be reporting to scam watch.

We got exactly the same as everyone.

This call was supposedly from the Taxation Office threatening me with a possible jail term. This call came up as a private No and went to message bank. The caller urged me to ring back. I contacted crime stoppers who said these calls came from overseas. I explained that I had the phone number but they did not ask me for it. I felt this call came from somewhere inAustralia. The caller also sounded like he was reading from a script. Shame the telcos cannot monitor these calls. Of course it may well have to do with money. There are no safe guards in place. Luckily I knew this was a scam as I had seen it on TV. I am very angry that these rotten people get away with ripping off the innocent. I emailed a few friends and two of them had been scammed and lost money. What can government agencies do to stop this increasing problem.

Yup, got the same call too and was asked to return call to this number. Have previously got calls and asked to call 02 6140 3464. Same story, but no name given this time. I just call and abuse them to let them know what they are doing is not appreciated by the community.

Yep - the same scam. Fortunately there was enough 'odd' about the phone message to make me suspicious - little things like the gap before anyone started speaking; the odd turn of phrase; the lack of addressee on the message, etc. I called the ATO and they confirmed that it was a scam. Certainly frighten the aged or unaware. I guess there's not much point in saying 'be suspicious' here coz you wouldn't be reading this if you weren't. So pass the word to others... There's a report about it on scam watch as well: [link].

Just had a message from Jason O'Conner from the ATO on 0261528636. Rather distressing. He left a message saying I had committed tax fraud and that my home was under surveillance. I called him back - what a nasty fellow. Said I had to report to the local court house?? Instead I phoned the ATO, who confirmed the hoax. Not a good way to start a Monday.

Just had this guy call our house today saying we didn't return a form signed and the same as above that we are under surveillance and will be arrested soon. Claims to be from the "Australian taxation protection office" and some other bizarre stuff. This time he was OFFICER Jason OConnor - wow didn't realise the ATO employed any OFFICERS. Hope he gets done. What a cruel, revolting person.

I had the same call and phoned the police to find out what to do - they advised that I log it with Scam Watch [link] report it - but please do not respond to the scammer's calls.

Message received at 10:46 on 30/07/15. Jason O'Connor from the Australian Taxation Office.... Calling about a possible arrest warrant for me as attempts to contact me via registered mail have been returned unsigned. He asked me to call this number before legal action was taken in my territory.

Had the same message on my recorder today. "Jason" from the ATO etc etc. I took a recording of the message. I called the number back and "Jason" answered, claiming to be from the ATO, then hung up when I mentioned the message. I tried calling back a few times and there was no response... The line or number is now dead.

This scam seems to be doing the rounds at the moment. Had a message left on my landline that it was someone from the ATO office(and Australian Immigration)and that there was a warrant out for our arrest etc etc. The guy said we should ring the above 'hotline' before we go to court...!

L

Creepy scammer - didn't care who answered the phone - claimed to be ATO- claimed a warrant for my arrest- how stupid and naïve he was thinking I would fall for that!!

Calls were received from this number on 27th July and again on 29th July advising that they were from the ATO and that your personal tax from 2004 to 2013 were going to be investigated. They also mentioned that the house was no longer ours and the bank accounts have been frozen. And that we would be arrested in several hours and the house was under surveillance. We will be phoning the police.

Definitely a spam number. Person with asian accent pretending to be Australian Taxation Office representative urging you to ring that number (suppose to be ATO Hotline) because they found some problems with your tax return. If not you may find yourself in court.

Stay away from them and report immediately.
