Just had a message on my answering machine saying I had to ring back asap as I was guilty of tax evasion/fraud. I laughed when I heard it as the bloke, Kenneth Matthews, was obviously reading a script and has very poor English. Definitely scam as ATO never contact you this way. My phone, on the useless Do Not Call Register and also a silent number, showed Private, but he read out 02 61528615 to call him back. Got my husband to listen to the message, he thinks the clicks during the call could be them going through different servers so the call can't be traced.
My Mother-in-law received a call from this same scum of a person, claiming that she owed quite a sum of money to the ATO and that if she did not go to her Bank, withdraw the amount and then deposit into a bank account he provided, then the Police would be knocking on her door in a couple of days to arrest her, "throw" her in jail and she will also need a criminal lawyer.
As my Mother-in-law only deals in cash, this did not (at the start) seem strange to her.
I am very glad she had foresight to call me, and I explained the scam to her.
Watch out, he is the lowest scum, DO NOT FALL FOR THIS.

Name left on answering machine Kenneth Mathews, when rang back using seperate untraceable number person answering was Mark Davies.
At a guess would probably say using other names.
Had a message on my answering machine today from this imbecile. Hope he calls back. Time for some scam baiting.
I have just received the same message it was left on my answe machine!! Idiots make it sound so urgent. I hope no one out there falls for these scamming scum.
The person who called claimed to be from the ATO, left a message indicating I needed to call immediately. He gave his name as Kenneth Matthews. He claimed to have access to an Audit of my Tax Returns 2009/13. He also claimed that I had purposefully conspired to defraud the ATO and Commonwealth, and that I would face criminal charges which would see my property and assets frozen and my future income frozen while the charges were pursued by the Tax Ofice. He said that he needed to read me a document which included the crimes of which I was to be charged. I was told that I was not to it interrup while he read this and that this was being recorded. The line kept clicking/cutting out which I thought may have been because the call was being recorded. I asked why the ATO had not written to me, he claimed that I had been contacted and gave dates in March and April 2015. I knew that this was untrue and told him so. The call dropped out and I was unable reconnect on the number he had given. The fact that this was a malicious call had not occurred to me during the call, but the tone and manner of the communication was threatening and inflammatory, albeit spurious.
Yes got the same message, obviously a scam does the ATO have a contact email for this type of thing.
On my work number, I received an automated recording call from someone saying they were from the ATO and there has been a lawsuit for tax evasion filed against "me" (addressing the party being sued as an individual not a business). This call came from a private/blocked number but the recording told me to call 02 6152 8615 and there is only 3 Google matches for that result (one being this page).
The person speaking was speaking broken and poor english and said that the police would come to me to issue a warrant for my arrest.... That's not quite how it works so it kind of makes sense that this is a scam/fake call.
