I too just received call stating he was john mathews from ato, to call back or get my solicitor to call back. Thought it was a scam ato don't ring you about anything.
Received message on our 101 message service during the day from John Mathews from ATO. The beginning of message was garbled so couldn't hear what he wanted but he was very definite in saying we should get back to him. Slight accent tipped me off and googled to find this site.

Just received a phone call from this number stating his name was John Matthews and he was from ATO! Trying to prosecute me for tax evasion.

Had a message on our home phone (which is private) stating he was from the ATO and to call him back stating he was a John Matthews. Will report it.
Received a call on Friday 1 May from the same John Matthews insistent I call back on the number but when I did an Indian answered saying he was from ATO IT data collection department. Said I wanted to speak to John Matthews but he was in meeting and would get my file but instead hung up.
There was a message left on Telstra 101 yesterday 3.23pm from a man calling himself John Mathews and he said he was from the “ATO, the Australian Tax Office, from the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions” He said call 02 0 6145 2528 or get my solicitor to call as papers had been signed to prosecute me for Tax evasion. He warned me not to ignore the call. I thought I detected a slight Irish accent.
We checked the ATO sites and couldn’t see this number anywhere, then Googled the number. We found other comments on this site advising of the scam. We also reported it to Scamwatch. They said it sounded like a phishing scam and advised us to simply tell the man that he had been reported if he calls again, and just hang up.
Scam ATO comfirmed this.
