This type of scam, known as the "tax scam," exploits common fears associated with financial and legal obligations.

User Experiences

They just called left a message the same as most other people on here! I rang back concerned that someone would be arrested however they didn't leave a name in the message in regards to who the message was even for! I asked why there had been no paper work sent out and they claim they sent someone to the house twice but no one was home and that we owed $80000 or some ridiculous amount. I said that this didn't seem right because we all work and pay our taxes and questioned whether we could talk to the police about the matter because it seemed dodgy. Wasn't he quick to get off the phone then and hung up on me! I recorded the whole conversation anyway so taking ot to the police!!!!! Waste of sperm people that try and scam people.. Get a life!

I received a similar call from the same guy saying the same things about tax evasion and a warrant of arrest will be served on me by the police. This Jason has a very strong European accent.

A message was left on my work phone to say I had a tax evasion and to immediately call this number 02 6140 3492 from an american sounding person. They did not know my name, what organisation and gave no other details.

Was contacted today by a very upset customer of my bank, from this number, who had been threatened with immediate arrest if she did not pay a debt of $10.000.

My job is to ask questions in unusual situations, and a question about whether she was under duress got the answer that she had received such a call. We were all very pleased in the branch to be able to reassure her & make sure she didn't pay these people a cent.

Once again, it was this same number, an australian name given with a very heavy accent, many threats and a firm instruction to not discuss the demand or the payment with anyone.

Too many bells went off with this, and disgusted that it seems to be our elderly who are most targeted and vulnerable to these scammers.

Took a call just now from someone who described himself as Mike David, Junior Officer from Canberra ATO. Wanted to talk to me about a tax evasion case against me that the local police are going to contact me about... And that my case file is being downloaded for the Federal courts. I asked for the name of his manager and I got David Marshall.

I'm waiting for the police to contact me... Seemed like the safest option.

Same storry. He told us that we gonna get arrested if we don't pay 2500aud within 3 hours. Unfortunately the police can't track him.

We have just had the same message left on our answering machine today. Sounds very much like spam. Why do people waste our time.

Received a call from a person called Jason who said that a marshal would come and arrest me for tax evasion if I did not ring back this phone no 0261403491. My accountant rang the tax department and it is definitely a scam. Do not ring back.

Yep got the same as the previous comments. If the ATO wanted to contact me about an evasion of tax, they would write numerous letters - not leave a phone message saying I would be arrested if I didn't call them back. SCAM!

I recieved a call today and was about to answer it when I saw that the caller ID said overseas, I let it ring out fully expecting the caller to hang up. I was very surprised when the person left a message on my answering machine saying exactly what Stuart and the other commennt on here said, and that I need to call them back on 02 6140 3491 he said his name was Jason Aquana from the Tax Office, I have an evasion notice and that a Marshall would come knocking on the door and arrest me, he repeated this and was very threatening. He had a heavy accent and did not say who the message was for or what address they would come to, I imagine if I had answered they would at some point ask for money or bank details to pay for fine or taxes or whatever. This is a SCAM. Please make sure everyone in your house knows this new take on their call and make sure know one gives out any details, not name address or even the state you live in. Good luck to everyone and we can only hope that one day these people will get caught.

I had a voicemail left and I have tried ringing it back several times and after waiting 30 seconds I get the message in a foreign language and then English. The Message sais someone from "The Commonwealth Court" will come and arrest me. We don't have "commonwealth Courts" in Australia. Australian Tax Office Go through the Federal Court. The message also said a "Marshall" from the police force will come and arrest me. Marshalls are an American thing. We have police officers in Australia, not marshalls.

I got a call from this number on 1/7/2015. Claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office. The Caller spoke poor English, possibly indian/Pakistani?.

The caller did not introduce themselves or identify me as the recipient, but only threatened to have someone? Arrested if I did not comply with their request to contact them back. Out of curiosity, I did and got someone claiming to work for the Australian Taxation Office. When I questioned the Indian? Operator on why I received a phone call threatening arrest if someone? Did not contact them immediately, I was told my number was going to be passed on to the police and I was going to be arrested. At this stage, the phone call went downhill from there and I went to town on this idiot. I'm still waiting for the police to arrest me. If they come, I'll pay the fine and apolgize, but I'm not holding my breath waiting.

Don't waste your time ringing this number. If the Tax Office wants you, you will be contacted by official mail or if you get a phone call you will be specifically identified as the person they wish to speak to, not just a recorded message saying that "you" need to contact us immediately or "you" will be arrested.
