02 6140 3478: Scam - ATO Tax Fraud

Just received a call from this number - very convincing and scary.

Initial caller has convincing phone manner.

My 2nd call from them. I replied last week and also got what sounded like an Indian call centre. Can't anything be done to shut these people down?

Automated call saying I have commited "Tax offenses" and my house is under surveillance. Reported to ACCC same day.

Interesting - rang back this number - you get what sounds like a call centre with a person with an Indian accent - then they go into asking your personal information - hung up at that stage. Initial call was a robo message. Very sophisticated scam.

I got this message today on the phone. Number was 0343094063. This is Jason O'Connor from the ATO and lawsuit stuff. Definitely a scam. So I decided to repeat what he said to me over and over again. What a wimp.

I received the same scam phone call 6/5/16 from Jason O'Conner return phone number 0260642057. What a load of rubbish, does he think we are dumb. My only question is who do we call to someone in authority and let them know that this is occurring as I don't want my mother or any elderly person having to put up with this conman?

I got a call from another number and asked me to call back on 02 6140 3478. When I called back, this guy claimed that he is from Immigration department and there is a case lodged against me. Initially he was not able to confirm if the case was against me, or my wife or my business. Then my second obvious question was "who has put the case against me?". I was told it was Australian Embassy in New Delhi. I told the guy that if he is working in immigration, he would have know that there is no Australian Embassy in New Delhi. Which he claimed there is one and after few rounds of yes and no, I explained him that there is an Australian High Commission but not an Embassy and if he is from immigration he should have known a difference between them. Lol... He got irritated and cut the line after threatening.

Now I am calling this number every few minutes to irritate them and to show how you feel when you get unwanted calls. I suggest all other to keep calling them again and again.

And of course, I will be informing police about their call too.

I had 2 messages left on my message bank on seperate days from "Jason Oconnor" stating he was from the ato and bla bla bla I was going to be arrested, no names were mentioned so I figured it was a scam. Just rang him back today for the fun of it and the man who answered said he was from the ato. I said I had some messages on my message bank from this number he then asked for my phone number to which I replied I wanted his phone number, then he said not to waste his time to which I replied stop leaving messages on my message bank you ****ing scumbag he then called me a mother****** and hung up. It was a bit of fun. But be careful I can see some elderly people possibly falling for this.

Further to my recent comment of today's date (13/10/15) regarding a man with a VERY heavy accent leaving a message on my message bank saying local police would come to arrest me regarding tax evasion, I suspected it was a scam, and believed that the ATO would NOT LEAVE AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE TO BE REPLIED TO. It was good to see thAT verified on this site.

I WANT TO STRESS THAT THE NUMBER GIVEN WAS: 02 6140 3475 - so similar to the one mentioned above.

I got a call from a number today (Tuesday 13/10/15) very.

Heavy accent stating that I was to reply to that number.

He left no name whatsoever and didn't address me by name.

He said he was from the ATO and mentioned that I was up for tax evasion and that local police would come to arrest me! It sounded like a scam! I did not phone back! And when I saw the notification on this site that the ATO WOULD NEVER LEAVE AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE, I.

Was sure it was a scam!! I hope this might help someone else! It was quite scary all the same! Thank goodness I didn't phone back and give ANY details whatsoever. And I won't either! And thank goodness for this site!

Received a call from him today he is going by a new name marvin smith and a new number 02 6140 3473 same scam.

Got the same message from 'Jason O'COnnor', Indian accent, threat of tax evasion law suit and jail, but he used the number 0261528641.

I received a call in Brisbane on Monday morning 27th July. Was from a PRIVATE number and went to answering machine on my landline phone. Blurb about a tax evasion charge from ATO and local police would come with arrest warrant and to call back on this number. Obvious scam.

Scam indeed - fellow rang an elderly friend and said he was from Australian Taxation Office and was sending a summons for an outstanding debt. Left this sydney number 6140 3478.

I got the same call but on my answering machine. Said his name was Jason O'Connor and that there was a warrant out for my arrest. I went straight down to the police station and they tried the number Got straight through to a Jason O'Connor the worry was that he had my full name and address. The police gave him plenty of rope on the phone. He eventually said he was from Germany but it's all nonsense apart from him having my address.

17/06/2015 - I had a automated message, regarding the same bullshit "Jason O'Connor from Australian tax office - Someone has placed a lawsuit against your name"..

I decided to delight myself and call the number back.

Straight up I new this wasn't a NSW number as the dial tone change. You know it is going to a different country. I tried to play alone but when you here a Indian man state his name is "Jason O'Connor" you know it is bullshit. I told him that he was a scam and how stupid do you think we are (Australian's). He hung up on me. I rang back for him to pick up and hang up (cause that's what the ATO does "yeah right").

PLEASE KNOW THE AUSTRALIAN TAX OFFICE WOULD NEVER LEAVE A AUTOMATED MESSAGE FOR YOU TO CALL THEM BACK!!!.

They think that we will panic and give them our personal details. DON'T DO IT!!!

I had a call today and a message was left -the number was "private" but they asked me to call back urgently on 02 6140 3409.

The details given previously about the....3478 number sound very similar. Indian accent, from the ATO, regarding serious charges against "you".

I got a call on my home phone, literally about 20 minutes ago, I did not pick up as the number wasn't familiar and I do not usually pick up unfamiliar numbers. A man with a foreign accent left a voicemail and said something about him working at some place (can't remember what it was as it was very hard understanding him) he then said that theres three criminal charges against me and my identity is being investigated or some crap like that. As I am a very private person, I freaked out as to how they got my number and my last name. In confusion and uncertainty, I phoned them back and the same guy picked up again. He wanted me to give him my name and other details, at this point, I was frustrated and did not fall for his shit so I hang up on him. I typed in the number on Google and its led me to this website. I understand now that it was a scam, and I just want everyone reading this to know that you should not ever give out your details, especially to these complete strangers, Not even your name. Im just still ️so shocked as to how in the world they got my home phone number. Im certainly going to look into it. Thank you for reading, hope this helped.

I too got a call on my mobile today saying I have a warrant out for fraud against the ATO. The scary thing was that he had my home address. I did not let him know this was my correct address and told him I'm calling the police. He said please don't as someone will be coming to my front door to identify themselves. I hung up, and called my local police station. The police advised me that it is a scam and to notify scam watch. I have reported the scam. This has really upset me that this person knows where I live.

Almost identical script for me: "This message is intended for Mr xxxxx [mispronounced]. Hi, this is agent Daniel calling from the Australian Taxation Office. The reason of my call is to inform there is three federal charges pressed against you and your identity is under investigation. Now, in order to clear your name you need to call direct 0261 403 478. Thank you and have a good day." Similar to other posts on this page, the pace and accent did not seem Australian. The way the phone number was given 0261 [slight pause] 403 [slight pause] 478 did not seem like someone who has lived in Australia.

I was called from this number but no one was picking up the phone. When called back, I was told it is ATO trying to get in touch about legal matter (sapoena etc). It does not sound genuine at all- accent is NOT australian. There is no reason why ATO wants to call me but not able to explain anything except trying to frighten me!

This call came before on my home line few days back but it was so transparent, I told him off. They use a background noise of a 'office hum'.

What happens if you ring the number they tell you to? Happened to my dad and he rang the number but they asked for little details, he did this while I was not home I would of told him it was a scam.

Please note: Mum has advanced dementia and Dad died in 2013. The voice is definably a foreign accent, sounds like he was reading from a script as words were well spaced.

Police were not interested but was told best to report it to Scamwatch and notify the ATO.

We also received a call from a guy stating he was from ATO by the name of David Michael, he left a voice mail message. He has broken English and was very hard to understand.

I hope that people see my message and others that are posted prior to giving out any personal information over the phone.

Yes they are still at it. I had a message and after trying to understand the very bad English I went online and found this. No stress to me but a was of time. You wonder where there names and numbers are getting leaked from.

Left a message from "Officer Marcus" stating that he was from the ATO and that there were federal charges against me and to call back on 0261403478 to "clear" my identity. UHHHHH as if someone would call and leave all those details on an answering machine yet say the message was for a person using only my last name not mrs miss or ms and the ato would definitely not leave what it was about. DUMB ASS My caller id also tells me when it is an overseas call.

Everyone be aware another "ATO" scam from India.

They scared my younger brother into crying thinking that I was going to jail for 24 hrs. I'm not in the country right now and wasted money calling them back from Sweden only to hear a broken line but could make out an Indian ascent. Hung up and saw this page. Thing is, there could be a lot of people who will panic and just pay the money.

They left a message on my phone phone... Used my full name too which throws you a bit - also they do sound very professional - but don't be fooled! A total scam!!

Had exactly the same call on my mobile phone last Thursday 19-03-2015 from the same number from a James William (Indian accent) about tax fraud and that he was in the process of sending the police to my home address to arrest me! I had moved 3 months prior (which he wasn't aware of) so I wasn't overly concerned at the news but asked him for more information and got put through to another Indian person by the name of Steve Morgan (!?). He gave me his extension number as 6159. I told him I had moved and he asked for my address which I refused to give as there were clearly holes in his accusations. I didn't give him any other details but took his details and told him I was going to phone the tax office as I couldn't verify his identity and he seemed quite happy and relaxed about it. I checked on line and found this forum which confirmed it as a scam. I thought it strange that the call was from Canberra tax office as I live in Queensland! Thank you for your posts. I hope others get to read this before parting with any personal information.

Had a message left on my phone saying it was Agent Smith (with a very Indian sounding accent) from the ATO and there were 3 federal charges against me and my identity was being investigated. Please call this number to avoid the matter being taken further. Blah blah blah. A friend had just told me his mother had the exact same call recently so I knew straight away that it was some nasty person trying to scam me!

Received a call at 13:20 today from a man with an Indian accent (name Alvin Michael) who claimed to be from the ATO. He told us that we have three federal charges against us and that we needed to call him back on this number to clear our names.

Just received a message on answering machine stating Agent Ali from ATO about federal charges for identity fraud. Ring back on this number to clear your name! What a scam.

Just received a call from ATO agent Michael wanted my partner to call back as there are 5 federal tax charges. He had an Indian accent and talked to me for about 7 minutes. Wanted me to write down this telephone no.

Just received a phone call on behalf of my mother from some agent of the ATO. She kept getting passed around to different so called agents. They have told her if she does not pay a large sum of money straight up and over the phone she will be taken to court. First of all if this was the case wouldn't she have gotten notification of this legality in the mail saying she had overdue funds and a local sheriff or police officer would have handed her an arrest warrant!! I believe this is the next step up from a regular check your computer because we think you have a virus phone call. These Indian guys were NASTY!!!!

Got a call from agent james williams stated as he is from ATO, canberra office regarding an income tax warrant and while asking about what it is about he given the office number 0261403478.

Same call received today from an "agent of the ATO". Saying there were federal identity charges pending against me and I needed to call the number to clear my name. That spells IDENTITY FRAUD! I assume if I were to ring back I'd get asked questions to identify myself, including confidential information which would then be used for fraudulent transactions. Don't ring them back!!!

Some guy just left a voice mail asking to call him back on this number, something about urgent ATO charges but it was a bit hard to understand the accent, he sounded very urgent and panicked, I'm glad I checked this forum as I now consider the message a scam based on everyone else's experience. Would recommend that you don't answer/respond.

I too got a call from this Agent Smith... I would recommend not calling this number. This is not ATO procedure. Scam. Rest assured if the ATO had placed fraud charges on you that not only would you be notified by mail but the local police would serve a warrant to appear in court. This is a nasty turn in phone scams and how about we just legislate these bastards out of a job. Make telephone canvassing illegal.

Got a message from agent xxxxx on my answering machine got my name the wrong way around telling me he was from ATO and my identity was under investagation and to call him back on 02 61403478.

Male with very heavy Indian accent, left message on my machine saying there were 3 separate charges placed against me and to call back on 02 6140 3478. Sounded like complete garbage as was it so hard to figure out what he was saying.

Definitely sounded like a call centre.

We came home to a phone message from agent Smith from the ATO. Obviously a scam as you could hear the other call centre reps telling people they were agent Smith in the background.

This number is a a scam number. They claim to be the ATO and ask for money you haven't paid in taxes. If you get a phone call from this number saying you owe the Australian Tax Office money, rest assured that the Tax Office will send you a letter to notify you if you really do owe money. They will threaten to involve local police, but police often don't get involved with these issues. IGNORE this number and do not worry unless you get an official letter from the ATO. Always call to check before you make any payments.
