Understanding the Call from 02 6122 6300

If you’ve received a call from 02 6122 6300 / 0261226300, you’re not alone in raising an eyebrow. Reports from users categorically label this number as a scam, specifically linked to a phishing attempt regarding tax file numbers (TFNs). Let’s delve into the details.

Classification: Scam – Taxation Phishing

The exchange reported on 16/04/2021 outlines a classic scam operation: a robotic voice attempts to alarm the recipient by stating that their tax file number has expired. Following this alarming message, the bot provides an option to speak to a 'human' for further assistance. However, upon connecting, the individual encountered was merely asking for personal details, a significant red flag.

Why This is a Scam

  • Unusual Communication Methods: Legitimate government agencies do not use automated voices to inform citizens about important matters like tax statuses.
  • Requesting Personal Information: Genuine representatives will not ask for sensitive information such as your name and TFN over the phone.
  • High-Level Suspicion: The nature of the call – pertaining to an 'urgent' matter that requires immediate response – is characteristic of phishing attempts intended to extract confidential data.

How to Handle Calls from This Number

If you receive a call from 02 6122 6300:

  • Do Not Engage: Do not provide personal information, even if asked directly.
  • Hang Up: If the call seems suspicious or you feel uncomfortable, it’s best to discontinue the call.
  • Report the Number: This can include reporting it to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or your local consumer protection agency.

Using services like Reverseau for a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can assist in identifying unknown numbers before you pick up the call. Always be cautious about unsolicited calls, especially those requesting sensitive information.

Just got a call from them, a bot said my Tax file number has been expired and the bot told me press 1 to talk to a human. I did so, was presented by an Indian guy asking “what is your name” and “what is your tfn” I just hung up because first, they would obviously not ask for my name and tfn number if they’re going to call me regarding expirations. Low life dogs.
