Understanding the Scam Behind 02 6100 3146

The phone number 02 6100 3146 / 0261003146 has been reported multiple times by users, all pointing to a distressing trend - it's an automated scam that masquerades as a call from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). In these instances, numerous Australians have received alarming messages claiming they are under investigation for tax-related crimes, with threats of arrest or jail time looming.

The Nature of the Scam

Many reports have surfaced indicating the signature characteristics of this scam. Callers receive an automated message (often containing both male and female voices) alleging that there is a warrant for their arrest due to tax avoidance. These messages create undue panic, compelling individuals to engage. However, further investigation into the ATO has confirmed that these calls do not originate from them, aggressively pushing the narrative that it is indeed a scam.

Recognising the Signs

  • The calls are automated, hence lacking genuine human interaction until someone opts to connect.
  • The individuals on the other end, if connected, often speak with accents that raise suspicion, sometimes providing laughable responses when questioned about their legitimacy.
  • Messaging includes threats of jail or arrest, playing on emotional responses to coercively extract personal information.

Advice on Handling Such Calls

If you receive a call from 02 6100 3146 / 0261003146 or a similar source, it's crucial to handle it wisely:

  • Do not answer: If you see this number, let it go to voicemail.
  • Report the incident: Notify the ATO and relevant authorities about the scam.
  • Do not disclose personal information: Never provide your name, address, or other identifying information over the phone to unsolicited callers.
  • Use services like Reverseau: For additional assurance, consider services such as Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to identify the caller.

By recognising the telltale signs and taking proactive steps, you can protect yourself from falling victim to the deceit of scammers using 02 6100 3146 / 0261003146. Remember to stay vigilant and empowered, ensuring you're aware of who is attempting to make contact.

Automated message scam - claiming from ATO / Arrest warrant etc.

I pressed 1 to connect me to a person - it was a Nigerian accent and I asked "are you really from the tax office?" His response was "I am really from the tax office honey" when I told him that if he really worked for the Australian Tax office he wouldn't be calling me honey - he laughed while I used some colourful language towards him and hung up.

DO NOT give them your name or ANY personal information. It is a scam.
