Interestingly, the name 'Jennifer Smith' has been mentioned multiple times, likely a fictitious alias used to lend an air of credibility to the scam.

Why is this Number Classified as a Scam?

User feedback identifies this number as a persistent scammer trying to elicit panic and urgency, a tactic that is classic in financial fraud schemes. The callers assert that there is an ongoing fraud investigation linked to the recipient, often luring individuals into a false sense of dread. Notably, the scammers do not provide specific details, such as a name or reference number, further indicating their maleficent intentions.

Characteristics of the Calls

  • Impersonation of Government Officials: The callers induce fear by impersonating ATO officials, pretending that a fraud case exists against the recipient.
  • Poor Communication Skills: User reports describe the callers as having phrases that lack clarity, often speaking with heavy accents making it hard to understand them.
  • Hang-Ups: Legitimate organisations will not terminate calls abruptly or ask for sensitive information without proper verification.
  • Engaged Phone Line: Reports of engaged tones when attempting to return the call further hint that this is not a credible contact.

07/04/2016 Voicemail left by Indian female identifying herself as Jennifer Smith, allegedly from ATO. Stated serious fraud will call police and arrest warrant imminent. Do not ignore, call back asap on 02 60642058. Number does not ring at all. Ended with "have a good day'.

An obvious scam. Will report to ATO during business hours.

Received a call from this number. I rang them two times. First time an Indian lady answered stating it was the ATO. I told her I was asked to contact this number she then said that the office is closed and to call bSck on Monday. I told her that I have contacted the ATO and given them the number immediately she hung up. I then rang on another phone and again the same but it was a guy (Indian) soon a I told him I was asked to ring the number he hung up. I'm now going to keep my umpires whistle next to the phone and if ever I get another scammer I'll blow that whistle so loud that it will cause them pain.

SCAM! I received the same call from an Indian lady on my answering machine stating that they have files on me that are so serious that if I don't her back she will definitely go to the police. As I have a physical answering machine - I only got the last part of the message as her pre recorded message must have started as soon as my answering message started. I won't even bother to call back - even to string them along. Just sick!

Within 5 seconds of answering a call from 0260642042 on the 3/3/2016 I knew it was a scam. The male caller claimed to be from the ATO and his English was so poor I could hardly understand what he was saying. On questioning him several times as to what this was about, he hung up.

We have received many calls on the answering machine from 0260642042 from a Jennifer Smith claiming to be the Fraud Department of the Australian Tax Office saying there's a fraud case against 'your name' (they didn't say my name or other members of the household's name so this rings an alarm bell already) and that if we don't call them back they would go to the police. I phoned the number and the line was engaged all the time and when I did get through, she said she was from the Australian Taxation Office and asked who I was. I told her I'm not giving her my name or any other information until she tells me which Australian Taxation Office she's from and she hung up on me... What is wrong with people nowadays!

We got the same call on our answering machine today. If the person dose not state there name, what information you need, refence number etc then it's a SCAM big time.

If your not sure contact the ATO an ask if they have rang you.

Good luck and remember to report it.

This is a scam. Caller states they are from ATO and need vital information in order to stop a fraud case on you, going to the Police. They state it's urgent and to to ignore the call. When you ring back (to have a bit of fun with the idiot) there is no such number. Caller used the name Jennifer Smith!!!! Good grief, no imagination or what? Reported to ATO.
