Understanding the Scam Behind 02 5612 0310

The phone number 02 5612 0310 / 0256120310 has been flagged by users as a source of a phishing scam targeting unsuspecting individuals. Reports indicate that this number is used to impersonate banks or financial institutions with the intention of stealing personal and financial information.

Nature of the Scam

According to a user report dated 01/08/2023, the caller left a message stating that there were $1000 worth of charges on the recipient's credit card related to internet shopping. The message urged them to press '1' to discuss this alleged fraudulent activity. However, the recipient, who regularly checks their bank transactions via mobile banking, confirmed that no such charges existed. This illustrates a concerning trend in which scammers invent false scenarios to incite panic and prompt immediate action.

Recognising and Dealing with Phishing Attempts

  • Be Suspicious: If a caller presents alarming information about your finances, approach it with caution. Banks typically do not contact consumers in such a manner.
  • Do Not Engage: Never press any numbers or provide personal information when prompted by suspicious calls. Instead, hang up and independently verify any claims made by the caller by contacting your bank directly using official channels.
  • Report the Number: If you receive a call from 02 5612 0310 / 0256120310 or suspect a scam, report it using the resources available through Reverseau. Sharing experiences helps protect others by providing critical information on these scams.
  • Keep Informed: Stay updated on common scams and use resources like Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to identify unknown callers and avoid falling victim to similar schemes.

In conclusion, while the number 02 5612 0310 / 0256120310 appears to be associated with a phishing scam, awareness and vigilance can significantly minimise your risk. Regularly verifying your banking activities and being cautious with unknown callers are the best lines of defence against such scams. This is without a scam caller, they left a message telling me that there was $1000 worth of charges on my credit card from internet shopping and to press 1 to report it immediately! I have mobile banking and get updates on any transactions in and out of my bank account, safe to say there was none, be careful people and always check your bank account before replying! It seems these idiots are getting smarter and smarter at scamming people. Its a shame the banks don't invest more in to stopping this!
