    Yes I just received a voice message a very aggressive, threatening message on my answering machine today (28/09/2016) in a seriously distorted accent, referring to my "case file" and saying I should call back on the (02) 4858 1764 number. If they (quote) "do not hear from your side, be prepared to face the legal consequences as ...(distorted speech)... Have a nice day." I did not call back.

    WHY ??

    Reported this number to the ATO phone scams.

    Foreign man telling me I'm in trouble for tax evasion and fraud. And that there would be "serious legal consequences" for me to face if I didn't cooperate. Scammers.

    How do I report this number? As with others this is a scam asking for my tax file number or I I'll face serious consequences. I have not replied. This is the first from an actual person. I was getting them from an automated voice.

    I have had this number call me with an Indian sounding guy telling me that I have been put under investigation for Tax Evasion. The line sounds very scratchy and it was recorded in a call centre because there is lots of background noise.

    The number that shows up on Caller ID matches the number he said to call back which seems to be just a standard landline.

    Some one rang from this number pretending to be from the ATO & left a message on the answering machine saying that I had evaded tax and a warrant was being issued for my arrest and I was to ring them back. Seems like a scam to me.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
