    I have received 2 calls now on my landline, they say that "this is an urgent message from the Australian Taxation Office". They say you owe tax, no mention of a name of who owes the money, and that you returned mail and now there could be a warrant out for your arrest. Just hang up it is a scam.

    The usual pretending-to-be-the-ATO scam. Really badly garbled audio. I now have it diverted back to itself :).

    I have received 2 calls now on my mobile but am unsure whether they have my mobile number or landline as my landline is down and has been diverted to my mobile. They say that "this is an urgent message from the Australian Taxation Office". They say you shouldn't hang up and they say that you owe tax, no mention of a name of who owes the money, and that you returned mail and now there could be a warrant out for your arrest. Just hang up it is a scam.

    This is a "You are being sued by the ATO..." scam. Initially, they want your private information. Just hang up!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
