Details of the Scam

Reviewers have described a chilling experience: an artificial voice delivers a distressing message about an incomplete Vodafone contract. The urgency is manufactured, stating that disconnection will occur within a few short hours. Such tactics are common in phishing scams designed to instil fear, prompting quick and ill-considered action from the recipient.

Identifying the Warning Signs

  • Artificial Voice: The use of a robotic voice for important communications is a major red flag.
  • Pressure Tactics: Phrases like "your service is being disconnected" are typically used to provoke a hasty response.
  • Multiple Languages: The message and the penalising call-back system utilise different languages to appear legitimate but are strategic diversions.

Confirmed scam. Artificial-voice message left "This mobile service is being disconnected in 2 hours, Press 1 for English and 2 for Chinese". Message then repeats in Cantonese I think it is. You can call the number back surprisingly but it goes to what appears to be a 3:32 long recording faking as an interactive IVR queue with fake hold music before force disconnecting at the aformentioned call time each time. Message at the start of this spoofed IVR queue is in French and french-accented English. I can assure you this is NOT how any legit Telco would ever leave a voicemail as even if your service was disconnecting, nor is that how they would notify you ever either.
