Understanding the Threat of 02 4344 5676

The phone number 02 4344 5676 / 0243445676 has resurfaced in the recent reports from users concerned about a potential scam. This number claims to belong to NAB (National Australia Bank) and has been linked to phishing attempts designed to deceive individuals into divulging personal information.

The Scam in Detail

Based on user reviews dated 13 January 2025, this number has been reported as sending automated text messages suggesting that recipients had logged in to their NAB accounts from Auckland, New Zealand. The messages prompt individuals to call the provided number if they did not authorise the login, creating a sense of urgency. However, red flags abound.

Why This Number is a Scam

  • Unusual Messaging Format: Legitimate bank texts usually do not start with "FROM NAB," and they unequivocally identify the bank name through their registered number.
  • Sequence in Reference Numbers: The message's reference code comprised sequential digits (5678), which is highly unusual for typical banking transactions, as they generate unique and random IDs.
  • Poor Grammatical Standards: Official banking communications pay great attention to grammar and punctuation, further calling into question the legitimacy of the message.

Steps to Take if Contacted

If you encounter a message or call from 02 4344 5676 / 0243445676, it is imperative to follow these safety measures:

  • Do Not Call Back: Never contact the number provided in suspicious texts. Instead, use the official contact number you have for your bank.
  • Report the Scam: Notify the relevant authorities or your bank about the phishing attempt to alert them and help prevent others from falling victim.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly educate yourself on different types of scams to maintain a degree of scepticism towards unsolicited messages.

I received the following text from 0450 676 357: FROM NAB: You've signed in from AUCKLAND, NZ using a new device. If this was NOT you, please call us on 0243445676. REF: YG5678. I don't even have NAB, so this was an easy spot. Things that jump out to me showing this is scam are as follows: (for people who may not know what to look out for) - An automated text from your bank won't start with "FROM NAB", it will usually display the banks name where a phone number would be. - The reference number includes all sequential numbers (5678). Reference numbers are generated at random, and the chances of all of the numbers being sequential is next to none. - The phone number's area code is not in brackets. The banks put more effort into the grammatical display of its text messages. Be safe out there people, and remember. Never call the number provided on these messages, call the number you have for your bank.
