PayPal Impersonation Reports for 02 4095 2990

Seven contributors have reported calls from 02 4095 2990 (also written as 0240952990) in which callers falsely claimed to represent PayPal Security. The consistent pattern across all reports involves a male caller with an Indian accent, identifying himself as "Alex Wilson" from the PayPal fraud or security team, alleging that the recipient's PayPal account has been compromised by hackers who made suspicious Bitcoin purchases.

All contributors who received calls from 02 4095 2990 recognised the scam immediately because they either do not have an active PayPal account or could verify that no such fraudulent charges existed. Not one contributor lost money, shared sensitive information, or clicked any links. Each blocked the number after the call ended.

What Callers from 02 4095 2990 Claim

The caller from 02 4095 2990 consistently opens by stating that suspicious charges have appeared on the victim's PayPal account. Specific claims mentioned include multiple Bitcoin purchases flagged as fraudulent, transactions originating from other countries, and the implication that hackers have infiltrated the account. The caller frames this as an urgent security matter requiring immediate verification.

When challenged, the caller employs evasion tactics. One contributor reported that when asked to confirm their name, the caller claimed he was "not allowed to say your name out loud for privacy reasons" despite allegedly calling about account security. Another contributor tested the scammer by asking to call back, to which the caller insisted the line quality was fine and discouraged the callback attempt.

The caller attempts to extract personal details by asking the victim to confirm whether they have made Bitcoin purchases or authorised transactions. The underlying goal is to establish enough familiarity with the victim's account information to appear credible, then pivot to requesting sensitive details like login credentials or payment information.

Call Patterns and Timing

Calls from 02 4095 2990 occur during evening hours, including at 6:45 PM on a Friday night, deliberately timed during dinner when recipients are more likely to be home. One contributor noted the distinctive background noise of a noisy call centre with yelling audible, suggesting an organised operation running multiple simultaneous scam calls. Another described an "echoing sound as if calling from a toilet block," indicating either poor audio infrastructure or intentional voice masking.

All seven reports were submitted within a 72-hour window in mid-April, suggesting either a surge in outbound calls from 02 4095 2990 or a targeting campaign. The consistency of the script and caller identity across all reports indicates a coordinated scam operation rather than isolated incidents.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 02 4095 2990

If 02 4095 2990 calls you claiming to be from PayPal, hang up immediately. PayPal will never call unsolicited to request account verification or personal details. Do not engage with the caller or attempt to verify information they claim to have about your account.

If you have a genuine PayPal account and are concerned about its security, hang up, then independently verify the claim by logging into your account directly via the official PayPal website or by calling PayPal's official customer service number listed on your statement or their website. Never use contact details provided by the caller.

Block 02 4095 2990 immediately in your phone settings. If the number calls again from a different line, apply the same approach: hang up without engagement and block the new number.

Indian male in noisy call centre claimed to be Alex Wilson from PayPal security.

Said the reason for the call was that there were a number of suspicious transactions linked to my PayPal account for Bitcoin purchases.

I don’t have a PayPal account.

I acted blasé and asked him how much the Bitcoin purchases were and he rattled off “$399, $399, and oh my gawd there is a charge for $699”

I said “yeah I know about these, I make these purchases”

He seemed to be a bit confused and said “well ma’am that is good that you know about these, but while we were talking, someone has made a large purchase on your account”

I said “yes, that’s my husband doing a bit of shopping”

But the scammer was still trying to reel me in and said “look ma’am maybe we have the wrong PayPal account here, can you read me out so details…. “

I cut him off and said “everything is fine, all the purchases you see on your system have been approved by me”

Then I hung up and blocked his number.

I know he is a scammer. I don’t have PayPal, don’t use Bitcoin and lastly, I need to know the answer to this… why do most indian scammers, who can barely speak English think we are that stupid that that mostly use WILSON as their surname? I mean come on, be a little bit more creative.

Indian scammer called from busy call centre. Male said he was called Alex Wilson and was from PayPal fraud team. Alex said that my PayPal account had red flags as there were several large bitcoin purchases. Wanted me to verify personal details. I refused as I don't use PayPal so 100% knew this to be a scam.

Hung up on him and blocked this number.

Phone call at 6:45 PM on a Friday night - dinner time.

Noisy call centre noise.

Indian male.

Claimed to be Alex from PayPal Security.

Alex claimed there were fraudulent charges on my PayPal account which had been flagged.

Asked me if I had recently made any bitcoin purchases using PayPal as there were several transactions that looked suspicious.

Told him none that I was aware of (pretending to be concerned however was more annoyed that my dinner was getting cold as I know I don't use PayPal anymore and don't believe my account has been active in years).

I told him the line was a bit distorted and asked if I could call him back (as I know scammers don't like that). He told me he could hear me perfectly, to which I then pretended as though I couldn't hear him by constantly saying "hello, are you there?" for about a minute before I got bored and hung up, blocking number.

SCAM!

Scammer tried to convince me he was PayPal security and wanted to tell me my account was hacked. Hung up as I know it wasn't because I don't have PayPal.

Indian Alex Wilson from PayPal Security called me to say that there were fraudulent charges on my account. He asked for my name and I said "if you are calling me, you should have these details"

He claimed he wasn't allowed to say my name out loud for privacy reasons.

Aside from the fact I could hear yelling in the background of what seemed to be a noisy call centre, this call had scam written all over it.

Answered call as was expecting one. Male caller claiming to be from.

PayPal had an indian accent. Asked if I had made any large bitcoin purchases today or knew anyone that did using my account as there were purchases made in 2 other countries using my pay pal.

Account. The guy was clearly a scammer as I haven't bought any bitcoins and could see my pay pal account had no charges.

Told him good try scammer and hung up and I blocked his number.

Male caller. Indian accent. Echoing sound as if he was calling from in a toilet block.

Said his name was Alex Wilson from PayPal Security Team. Apparently my PayPal account had been compromised by hackers who had purchased Bitcoin using my PayPal account. He wanted to help me recover these costs and help me get my money back. Funnily enough, I have never used PayPal in my life, so don't have an account. I really didn't have time to entertain this scammer so hung up on him.

Indian male calling himself "Alex Wilson"

(Noisy call centre) said he was from PayPal and there were suspicious charges on my PayPal account which he wanted to discuss.

Ok, so I don't have a PayPal account so knew immediately to be a scam.

Hung up and blocked.

Just as an aside - why do all the scammers that have indian accents have the last name "Wilson"? Seems every single scammer who has called me has Wilson as a surname!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 02 4095 2990 a legitimate PayPal number?

No. PayPal does not use the number 0240952990 for customer calls. When PayPal needs to contact you, they direct you to call their official number listed on statements or the PayPal website, never the other way around. Callers claiming to be from PayPal Security who initiate contact from 02 4095 2990 are scammers impersonating the company.

What happens if I give the caller from 02 4095 2990 personal information?

If you confirm personal details such as your name, email address, date of birth, or account information to someone claiming to be from PayPal at 0240952990, the scammer can use that data to attempt account takeover, apply for credit products in your name, or sell your information to other criminals. Immediately change your PayPal password (if you have an account), enable two-factor authentication, and monitor your credit report. Report the call to Scamwatch and ACMA.

Why does the caller from 02 4095 2990 ask about Bitcoin specifically?

The caller from 02 4095 2990 mentions Bitcoin purchases because Bitcoin transactions are irreversible and attractive to scammers. By claiming suspicious Bitcoin activity on your account, the caller creates urgency and makes the scam feel credible. Once they gain trust by appearing to "help" you dispute fraudulent charges, they pivot to asking for payment or sensitive information to "secure" your account. Bitcoin is the currency of choice for scammers because victims cannot reverse transfers.

I told the caller from 02 4095 2990 I don't have a PayPal account. Should I still be concerned?

Not immediately. However, the fact that 0240952990 called you suggests scammers have your phone number in their database. This number will likely be sold to other scam operations or called again in future campaigns under different pretexts. Block 02 4095 2990, register on the Do Not Call Register, and monitor any accounts or services in your name. If you believe your personal information has been compromised, check your credit file and report the incident to ReportCyber.

Why does the caller identify himself as 'Alex Wilson' when calling from 02 4095 2990?

"Alex Wilson" is a generic, Western-sounding name chosen to appear credible and bypass initial suspicion. One contributor noted that multiple scammers with Indian accents have used the surname "Wilson," suggesting this is a scripted identity used across coordinated scam campaigns. The use of a Western name combined with an Indian accent is a deliberate strategy to sound like an outsourced customer service representative, which is what legitimate companies sometimes employ. This makes 02 4095 2990 calls seem superficially plausible to some victims.

What should I do if I already gave information to the caller from 02 4095 2990?

If you shared your name, email, or date of birth, change your PayPal password immediately if you have an account. If you shared banking details, credit card information, or login credentials, contact your bank and payment providers within 24 hours and report the call to ACMA at acma.gov.au and Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au. Monitor your bank statements and credit report for fraudulent activity. If money was transferred, report to cyber.gov.au and your bank's fraud team. Request a credit freeze if available in your state. Do not call the number 0240952990 back under any circumstances.
