    This number is is a scan. My Dad's computer froze & what looked like a Microsoft warning came up on the screen telling him to call this number so he did & some Indian fella answered but the call disconnected then almost immediately the phone rang with a suspect number coming up so l answered it & it was the same Indian fella, so l told him I know that you're a scammer & I'm tracing this call, he then started swearing at me then hung up. I tried calling the number back immediately & it said that the number was disconnected.

    I agree it is a scam. It came up on my father's computer from a web site which claimed to do a scam and came up with a fake error code.

    Our computer flashed up a number 0240620943 saying that we needed to ring this number and that we were not to shut down the computer otherwise our data might be corrupted. It had the Microsoft icon on it. My husband rang that number but then I checked the number on the internet from my computer and believe it is a scam.

    02 40620943. It's a scam, and to some extent I fell for it. But not entirely. My computer locked out last evening (Monday 15/2,). Instruction was that I had to call this number to get it unlocked. I did that, and foolishly allowed the guy remote access. After dealing with him for around five minutes he said that I needed protection, which could be provided for around $200.00 for one year, and I think it went up to $500.00 for LIFE. By then I realised it was a scam and terminated the conversation. My computer is fine now.

    What worry me is that if I Google search for "My IP Address", search result as top line display an IP address followed by wording "Your Public IP Address". The guy told me now my IP address can be used by anyone to hack into my computer - any comments?

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
