    Whilst watching you tube on my MacBook Air a tab popped up on web page and it was using my audio saying you have viruses on your laptop and please call 1800 954 356. The audio also said if don't call your Mac will be disabled and won't be able to be used. The lady who answered gave me her name Marie Thomas and her Id was 85733/009. She said for me to turn off safari spotify etc everything other than finder. Then she said she now was able to use my mouse and keyboard and went on web history telling me which were insecure sites. Then she said it would cost $149usd to fix the viruses $149 usd to set up firewall and $199 usd for something else. I then said I'd have to talk to my mum and she was suspicious especially when she heard the lady pushing me into paying and I told her that I would take it into my local apple shop. She then ended the call with thank you mam. I have shut my MacBook down and changed passwords but would love to hear if I should do anything else.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
