    Scam caller. Claiming to be from Telstra to discuss my internet connection. Telstra is not my provider. They then claimed to be an outsourced company calling on behalf of other providers. Plausable, but the problem is the phone number they called me on is not registered with any internet provider. When I called them out on that they said they'd disconnect my internet connection and hung up. Clearly my internet is still working...

    Man called from ‘Telstra’ to say my internet was being hacked. I asked him if I could contact my service provider (because I’m not with Telstra) to confirm with them and he hung up. Seems legit.

    Upon dialing the number (the curiosity killed me) I was received the standard recorded message, "Optus advises the number is incomplete or incorrect". So what does that make it? Spam?

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
