He WhatsApp a message wanting to buy a flute and did this routine of paying via Aust Post. It needed me to put my card details on this site. So I checked his number on this site and he turns out to be a Gumtree scammer..beware!
I just did a Google search on this guy and number & this site came up straight away. This weak person is trying to scam me right now. Monday 30th May 2022 on WhatsApp. I didn't even put any whatsapp details on the ad. He's a scammer and a low life!
Exact same scam almost happened to me! Old man called Alex Mitchell said he was too sick to pick up my books on Gumtree and said he can arrange delivery through AU post. EVERYONE BE CAREFUL AND NEVER REPLY TO STRANGER'S WHATSAPP MESSAGE!
He obviously looked me up on Whatsapp - I had not posted these details with the ad. Looks like he's impersonating someone else. He said he was sick and couldn't pick up, located in York. I asked if he knew someone I knew there, he said 'No, courier knows...', how dumb can he get? Not too bright for a scammer. Asked if he could pay "Auspost secure pay" see ACMA about scam details.
This number is a scam, he messaged me on watts app looking to purchase goods I’m selling on Gumtree, the idea is to get your banking info and personal details, do not reply, do not press any links you are sent SCAM BE AWARE!!
This guy messaged me today about something I'm selling on Gumtree. Alex Williams was his name as well. Can the scam watchers people do something about this?
Tried to SCAM me by messaging me on WhatsApp for the item I'm selling on Gumtree.
According to him his name is Alex Mitchell. He send me a malicious link disguised as Australia Post for me to supply my Bank Details for his payment and will send a courier to collect the item I'm selling.
I had a WhatsApp message soon after listing something on Gumtree - I didn't expect to get that much interest and I was wary of receiving a direct WhatsApp message rather than through Gumtree. It also said Hi Firstname Lastname, which I thought a bit odd. He said he was sick and couldn't pick up in person but would arrange it through Auspost and pay everything himself. I thought it was a bit fishy so I googled 'Alex Mitchell Gumtree scam' and found all these reviews from the same number.
So watch out anybody who receives the same kind of message!
He got me. I am usually very cautious but I let my guard down. Be aware. It all looks legit and my keenness to sell what I advertised on Gumtree made me vulnerable.
Just had someone text through WhatsApp on this number trying to get me to send them an item I had put on sale in Gumtree. They said they were sick and I should send to them and they would reimburse me. Could tell was a scam from person ignoring my advert and to call me instead of messaging.
About 3 weeks ago I posted on Gumtree an old scientific reference book - just in case there was a special interests collector there.
A few days later The "so called" Alex Mitchell sent a WhatsApp message wanting to buy the book. Because the said he was sick he said that he would arrange payment through an Aust Post system and would arrange shipment to him.
According to Google searches, he seems to be in Queensland!!
The weblink said that he had made the payment to the facility and asked for details of an account to forward the funds to. The account I gave, always only has less than $50 available but it was not showing the receipt of the money for the book.
I tried to phone him, but the calls have always been unanswered and after a while, he stopped making Whatsapp comments.
Since then I've been receiving landline nuisance spam calls from Brisbane. Most of which I've not answered and then when a voice mail has not been left for me, I then blocked the number.
My next step is to report the spam calls and Alex's Gumtree presence to the authorities. I hope the government can throw the rile book at him!
Thank you to everyone here who has already reviewed this number. The messaging seemed a bit too “professional” and made me do a quick search before I gave any details.
Definite SCAMMER ALERT.
Calls himself Alex Mitchell living in Woodford QLQ. He contacted me via WhatsApp after I posted an ad on Gumtree yesterday.
This person just tried to scam my credit card through a Gum Tree posting. Check the number he is using as per below. He was very persistent for the purchase, to get the personal banking password.
Appears to be a scammer on Gumtree via WhatsApp to request you click on a link to an Australia post site where they supposedly pay for postage for the item they are buying off you. They then ask you to “confirm the deal”. Do not click on the link.

The caller wants to access and control your computer.
