    I called the number back and was answered by a recorded voice said they were calling as part of some marketing campaign — asked for contact details so they could call me back, needless to say I didn’t leave a message!

    I received a call from this number today saying she was from a market research company. She started asking about private health insurance and insinuated that should get me a better deal. She then proceeded to ask for my full name, email address etc.

    I smelled a rat and when I said “this sounds like a recording” she hung up.

    Caller indicated they were doing a survey on recent private health insurance price increases. Voice sounded real but almost automated. Survey questions appeared to be generated by AI with some delay between each. When I asked questions I received abnormal answers and the survey terminated. Wondering whether this was an AI voice copying exercise?

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
