    Received voice mail this morning threatening that I was under surveillance and legal prosecution. I have called back on the number and person did not answer. Called back again and someone by the name Steve answered and reported he is from ATO and under tax investigation. Person asked what is your name and I answered saying if you doing tax investigation you should have my information. He got angry and said "f*k you" and hung up. This is scam and should be dealt accordingly.

    A message was left that I had been identified as a prime suspect in a tax evasion case in an affidavit issued ab the ATO. I questioned what circumstances and queried why I had not received any notice prior. The Philippine accent (male) advised that I certainly had been issued details and advised me to co-operate and asked for details of my Barrister!?? I asked for his details and he gave a name.... Very confident guy.... I then asked for further details and started to get quite firm and angry with the guy.... Line went dead.... Tried calling back and line went dead... THIS IS A SCAM.

    I got the same call just this morning. It got me completely by surprise because I've never had any trouble with the law. The only dealings I've had with the ATO in recent weeks were to a) lodge my tax return and b) cancel my ABN. According to one of my colleagues, the ATO doesn't make a habit of calling people with a recorded message and, as such, this particular phone call would be a scam.

    Got a call from this number with recorded message claiming to represent an agency and that I was under surveillance, pending court action and to call immediately. I called the number a spoke with a man purporting to be a federal officer pursuing me for tax fraud. As I was in touch with the ATO the week before regarding a separate issue and no mention was made of this with them - and I mentioned this fact, the line seemed to go dead. I believe this to be a scammer number so beware.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
