    Have had 2 calls from this number stating that they are from the ATO and that a law suit has been started against my name for tax evasion and before I am arrested call this number. These people are scums.... They are NOT from the ATO and are only trying to extract money from innocent people!!

    These people are scum. Contacted my elderly mum who is on the pension, she was in tears thinking she had done something wrong. I rang the number back and a person with an accent answered saying a lawsuit would start against my mum if she did not pay! I told him I was reporting the number to the police who would be looking into this further. Not fair when elderly are by themselves.

    On my answer machine was a recorded message saying that I needed to call that number regarding tax evasion, or have my Attorney call. That was all. I called the number back and a man answered the phone. I thought this was odd, as usually the tax office has 6 digit phone numbers and you need to press 1 for this or 2 for that. I hung up and called the tax office. They assured me it was a scam - they would have tried to get my bank account details and/or other personal details.

    Scam alert: Calls from this number say they are from the Tax Office. They want you to call back with your bank acct details. They are NOT from the ATO.

    If you're worried about your tax, call the ATO on their usual phone number.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
