    On 14 Sept 2017, I got a call from (02) 6145 0274 and left a voice message of a male with American accent saying that he is Officer Matthew Clark from Australian Tax Office and there is a lawsuit pending, and I must call back this hotline number, and I must not disregard his message.

    I had a call and voicemail today from +61 2 6145 0274 saying it was the ATO, do not disregard this call, and there was a lawsuit filed against me.

    Before I heard the voicemail I tried to call back the number and there was no answer.

    How are this scammers profiting from these calls? Are they attempting to hack phones? Get onto people and scam their personal details?

    I got 3 calls today and two messages. I'm an IT professional, with plenty of experience in online security. These calls are definitely scams and you can safely disregard this nonsense. Let the real ATO know about this, if you have time, or simply block this contact.

    I've received three calls over the past two days; first was a private number (they left a voicemail), second was 02 6140 3463 (I answered and hung up as I was half asleep this morning and annoyed) and lastly from 02 6145 0274 (again they left a voicemail). Sounds like an automated recording, stating his name is "Officer Matthew Clark" from the ATO and needs to talk to me urgently about a loss recorded on my account. They've left two different numbers to call back on, both starting with 261, which a quick Google search showed me was the prefix for Madagascar.

    I have my TFN linked to my MyGov account and have received the proper documents in regards to my taxes, so I knew the call was BS, but it's annoying me that they use an automated recording, so if I answer I can't yell at them. A few people I know are also receiving these calls. We just want them to stop wasting our time!!

    I have also received 2 calls today (12th September 2017) with the same American accent robot voice saying they are calling from the taxation office and to call back a number. I am assuming this is a new scam as they didn't say my name or my tax file number.

    02 6145 0274 and 02 6145 0273 called me on 12 September and left a message saying for my solicitor to call them - it was a robot voice.

    On 2 consecutive days in Sept 2017, I got 1 call from 3 different numbers:0261450273.0261450274 and 0261403463.

    They all had the same recorded mssg of a male with American accent saying that he is Matthew Clark from Aust Tax Office and there is a lawsuit pending, and I must call back this number, and I must not ignore his mssg.

    I don't believe that it was from the ATO as they would normally ask for a person by name and ask for ID details before saying what the phone call was about.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
