    I had just clicked on the "50 times the Queen was not amused" article on Elle.Com at about 8 pm AEST on 27/4/2022, when my laptop screen was completely covered by 4 "error messages", one on top of the other, the top two stating "Do not restart or use your computer. Your computer is disabled. Please call Windows. Access is the block security reason for this computer. Please contact us immediately. A technician will help you solve the problem" and "App:Ads.browserObject(2). Dll Threat Detected Trojan Spyware" and "Access to this PC has been blocked for security reasons. Contact Windows Support: (02) 4072 0821 (Security Helpline)".

    The window underneath stated "Your computer has alerted us that it has been infected with a Trojan Spyware. The following data has been compromised.

    > Email Credentials.

    Call Windows Support: (02) 4072 0821 (Security Helpline)"

    And the bottom window stated "Contact support (02) 4072 0821 (Security Helpline)".

    Three of the windows included the Microsoft logo and there was an audible beep when the messages were displayed.

    The poor/nonsensical English in parts of the error messages alerted me to a probable scam and so I did not phone the "Security Helpline" but switched off the laptop by holding the on/off button until it switched off, restarted it and ran my Norton system scan. It turned up and fixed one adware problem and my laptop then ran as normal with no problems.

    Given that the Microsoft Australia helpline number is 13 20 58, I believe that this was an attempt to obtain online access to my laptop for phishing or infection purposes and that the phone number (02) 4072 0821 should be investigated.

    This is a scam. Some pops appear up on your computer, saying that your computer has a virus. It asks you to call 0240720821 to get Microsoft Defender Support. I rang, asked for his name & employee number. He was rattled, and said " Michael / userid MK11107 ". He wanted access to my computer. I told him he was a scammer, and hung up.

    Just CTL/ALT/DEL, get TASK MANAGER up, close the browser programs. All good again.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
