    We had a message saying legal action was being taken against us regarding tax evasion. Gathered it must be a scam but would like to report it!

    Got the call today on my answering machine for 02 6188 5663 (one number different).

    First: ATO will almost NEVER call you.

    Second: They will ONLY leave a 13 xx xx number.

    Third: I rang the number, got the badge number and name of the person, then reported it all to ATO.

    Confirmed with ATO it is a SCAM.

    My mother got the call from the same mob this morning. It is a Canberra or Queanbeyan number but as my mother is an 82 year old pensioner who retired from work at 60, they are making a bit of a stretch. Called at 10.20 am 24/8/2016.

    Got a call from this number, it was a recorded message saying they were from the ATO and that they were proceeding with legal action as I had committed fraud against the ATO. It wanted me to call back ASAP to discuss the case etc etc They have tried to make it sound legitimate by providing an agent ID number but it is a scam.

    I hope they don't actually get anyone to fall for this.

    Scam call - Caller said they were from the ATO and that I guilty of tax evasion and fraud. They wanted me to call this number to discuss the case else they would proceed with legal action against me. The ATO does not ring you up in this manner. IT IS A SCAM.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
