Yes just happend to me too. Tax evasion and stating how serious it was, illegal action was imminent and I need to contact them straight away. ATO do not do this kind of thing and contact people in writing not urgent phone calls. Really strange accent too. Its a shame that people are like this.
This number left message on my answering machine from some Headquarters (name before not heard). Stating that there was a criminal case in my name for tax evasion and tax fraud and to ring 02 88800254, even was so kind as to repeat the number for me. And to be prepared for serious legal consequences if my side or my lawyers side (wouldn't that be the same side) didn’t get in contact ASAP.
Spoken in what sounded to be a fake American accent. Or a 'trying way too hard to be' American accent.
Looked up tax fraud scams and a similar thing came up only they were using a different telephone number.
Please beware and let all your family members know, especially the elderly ones know not to give them any details no matter how much they pester.
