    I have received several calls this coming from a private number, since I am waiting for a call from a government department that uses private number display, I have been answering these calls. It is usually a male voice with a heavy Indian accent using a very British sounding name, telling me about my internet being "hacked". I tell them that I can't access my computer at this moment and asked for a phone number to call them back on, they give 02-809 5421 and that they are located at 215 Miller st north Sydney, they don't seem to understand the question "which floor are you on?". I have phoned Telstra and reported the phone calls. People should be aware that Telstra will never call you about your computer being hacked, they just provide the Internet connection. Never give anybody your personal details over the phone.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
