    I received a phone call from 02 6188 5661 about tax evasion. Called back and spoke to a guy, who certainly had his story together. He identified himself as Kevin Sosa, gave his ID# as 908942 and my case ID # as SC4212RC. He said that he was from the Audit Dept from the ATO and that I was going to get a call from the police within half an hour and they would seize my passport and take me to court.

    Got the call today on my answering machine for 02 6188 5663 (one number different).

    First: ATO will almost NEVER call you.

    Second: They will ONLY leave a 13 xx xx number.

    Third: I rang the number, got the badge number and name of the person, then reported it all to ATO.

    Confirmed with ATO it is a SCAM.

    Just received an answerphone message from an american man saying: Before the case gets registered with the commonwealth court regarding details of your treachery and you get arrested by the local police department, we want you or your lawyer to contact us back on 0261885661.

    THIS IS A SCAM = the same man rang me last friday and demanded to know my name and details. I refused to give him this information instead I demanded to know his details. He refused. This went on for several minutes before he finally spat out that his name was Officer White. When I advised him that I would be lodging a complaint with our local law enforcement/telephone service provider he hung up.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
